"Talk to an Astronaut" event web site.
On Tuesday, January 24th, 2012, our much anticipated "Talk to an Astronaut" event took place on the campus of the El Dorado County Office of Education in Placerville, CA. The cumulation of this event was made possible through the efforts of the El Dorado County Office of Education, El Dorado Center-Folsom Lake Community College, Community Observatory, Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Project, and NASA. We would also like to acknowledge the extraordinary roll that Cindy Terpe, of the El Dorado County Office of Education, played in bringing this highly educational event to our county.
The ARISS contact was an opportunity for students and educators to interact with the crew aboard the International Space Station (ISS) through a question and answer session conducted using amateur radio. In preparation for this event, a web site was designed and set up for 3rd—5th graders in El Dorado County to submit questions for possible selection by NASA. Students from several schools in El Dorado County submitted approximately 140 questions. With only a 10 minute window where direct communication with ISS could take place, only 20 questions could be asked. After reviewing the submitted questions, 30 were brought forward to NASA for consideration. NASA selected the final 20 from the questions submitted.
To add to this "once-in-a-lifetime" event, students who submitted the selected questions, were invited to attend the live event along with their parents and teachers. In addtion, they were given the priviledge of asking their question directly to Dan Burbank, American astronaut aboard the ISS.
